New Delhi, Feb 8 (Inditop.com) The Delhi High Court Monday upheld Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi’s appointment to the governing body of St Stephens’ College as valid and allowed him to participate in its meetings.

A division bench comprising Justices Pradeep Nandrajog and Suresh Kait said: “Till the other bench decides another application, we would permit Quraishi to participate in the meetings of the college.”

The court was hearing the appeal filed by college principal Valson Thampu challenging the single bench order, on a civil suit by former member Ajay P. Singha challenging the appointment, restraining Quraishi from participating in the governing body meeting.

In October last year, Singha moved the court against Quraishi’s appointment, contending that he was removed before his tenure as the governing body member ended, and replaced by Quraishi.

He said he had been appointed against the casual vacancy created by the resignation of Naveen Chawla, the chief election commissioner.
